About
Vel Orendis is an academy for production engineering: system design, databases, caching, messaging, reliability and AI engineering, taught through moving diagrams, live simulations and an examiner who asks you to defend your reasoning.
Why it exists
Most courses teach the name of a thing. This one teaches the decision behind it: what a cache costs, when a queue helps, why retrieval fails on the question that matters. Knowing the word is never taken as proof of understanding. You pass a trial by setting up a system that works and saying why.
How a lesson works
- Discover: the idea, shown as a picture first.
- Explore: a live simulation where one control changes one thing.
- Apply: a realistic target to meet.
- Defend: your choice and its cost, argued to the examiner.
- Master: harder variations, as an optional bonus.
- Revisit: short questions that come back on a spaced schedule.
A lesson's core path takes 8 to 15 minutes. If you already know a topic, prove it straight away and move on. There are 80 lessonsquests across 12 disciplines, and they open in waves, starting with The Stale Cache.
Two experiences
Classic is the scholar's way: engraved diagrams, ceremony and a campus to explore. Gamified is the player's way: quests, levels and T, a small companion who watches the simulation with you. The lessons, grading and progress are the same in both. Switch at any time from the top of the page.
Where the material comes from
Lessons are written from understanding, with our own examples about fictional companies. Each one cites references for what it teaches, pinned to the version that was read, with its licence.
Who makes it
Vel Orendis is designed and built by Turki Alshuaibi. It runs without accounts, without tracking, and without a server for anything you do in a lesson.
The first lesson is open, and questions and corrections are always welcome.
